The Long Run is a sharply crafted late-period Eagles album that finds the band refining their country rock and soft rock sound rather than repeating it. Released in 1979, it became their final studio album with the classic seventies line-up and reflected the pressure of following the blockbuster success of Hotel California. Written and recorded amid well-documented tensions, the record still delivered major hits including Heartache Tonight and I Can’t Tell You Why, both of which helped keep the Eagles firmly at the centre of mainstream rock. Its blend of precision, melody and cool control made it one of the band’s key later statements.
