Diana Ross’s Lady Sings the Blues soundtrack is a classy 1972 showcase for her Billie Holiday-inspired turn in the film that made her a major screen presence as well as a pop star. Built around jazz standards and period material, it places Ross’s vocal phrasing at the centre of the story, supported by big band colour and soul-jazz inflections that give the set both polish and emotional weight. The album helped extend the reach of the film beyond the cinema and became one of Ross’s most distinctive soundtrack releases, linking her Motown fame with a more dramatic, adult repertoire.
