First issued in 1973, the work blends Latin mass settings such as Kyrie, Gloria and Agnus Dei with voices, rhythms and environmental sounds recorded on location, creating a striking meeting point between concert composition and ethnographic documentation. Fanshawe, a British composer and explorer of world musics, shaped the piece as a personal response to his travels, and its bold collage form helped make it one of the most distinctive cross-cultural albums of the early 1970s.
