Black Sunday is the breakthrough album that made Cypress Hill one of hip-hop’s most distinctive mainstream acts. Released in 1993, it sharpened the group’s dark humour, stoned swagger and heavy boom-bap production into a sound that was both commercial and uncompromising. The album yielded “Insane in the Brain”, their biggest crossover hit, while songs like “I Wanna Get High” and “Hits From the Bong” helped define the group’s cannabis-laced identity. Its mix of gangsta edge, streetwise wit and booming low-end made Black Sunday a major force in early-1990s rap and one of the era’s most recognisable releases.
