Colour By Numbers made Culture Club one of the defining pop acts of the 1980s, balancing bright synth-pop, reggae-pop and soul-inflected melodies with Boy George’s vivid personality. Released in 1983, the album followed the huge success of Kissing to Be Clever and confirmed the group’s gift for writing hooks that crossed radio formats and national borders. Driven by singles such as ‘Karma Chameleon’, ‘Church of the Poison Mind’ and ‘Miss Me Blind’, it became a major international hit and helped establish Culture Club as era-defining chart stars.
