    Count Basie Orchestra’s The Atomic Mr. Basie is one of the great late big-band albums, turning the Basie sound into a lean, sharply arranged 1958 triumph. Built around Neil Hefti’s writing, the record balances punchy ensemble swagger with relaxed swing, giving the orchestra a modern edge without losing its easy lift. The album is especially celebrated for “The Kid From Red Bank”, “Splanky” and the hushed, elegant “Lil’ Darlin’”, which became a Basie signature. Widely regarded as a landmark of post-swing jazz, it captures the orchestra at full command, with crisp riffs, controlled power and impeccable timing.
