Cheap Trick’s self-titled debut is a taut, hook-rich statement that helped define American power pop. Released in 1977, it introduced the band’s blend of crunching guitars, sharp melodies and sly humour, with Rick Nielsen’s songwriting and the group’s tight interplay giving the record its punch. Songs such as He’s a Whore and ELO Kiddies show how the album balances bratty attitude with memorable choruses, while The Ballad of TV Violence adds a darker edge. Though not yet a major commercial breakthrough, Cheap Trick established the sound and wit that would make the band one of rock’s most durable live acts.
