Tunnel of Love is one of Bruce Springsteen’s most revealing and sharply written albums, replacing arena-scale swagger with finely observed songs about love, uncertainty and self-knowledge. Released in 1987, it followed the huge success of Born in the U.S.A. and found Springsteen working with a more restrained, intimate sound that suited the record’s emotional focus. Written and largely recorded in the wake of personal upheaval, the album pairs crisp pop-rock melodies with candid lyrics on tracks such as Brilliant Disguise, Tougher Than the Rest and One Step Up. Its mix of honesty, craft and restraint made it a key late-1980s Springsteen statement.
