The River is Bruce Springsteen’s most expansive early statement, balancing exuberant rock ’n’ roll with some of his sharpest social and emotional writing. Issued in 1980, the double album moved between rambunctious singles such as Hungry Heart and Out in the Street and darker material like The River and Point Blank, showing the breadth of the E Street Band at full force. Co-produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau and Steven Van Zandt, it refined the punch of Born to Run into a tougher, more hard-bitten sound. Its mix of joy, disappointment and American working-life detail made it one of Springsteen’s defining albums and a key bridge to the darker concerns of the 1980s.
