Dylan & The Dead documents one of the most unexpected live pairings in rock: Bob Dylan with the Grateful Dead. Issued in 1989, the album captures the chemistry and friction of Dylan’s songbook meeting the Dead’s loose, communal playing style, recasting familiar material such as All Along the Watchtower and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door in a different live frame. The set grew out of the 1987 tour and stands as a notable artefact of late-1980s folk rock, when two American icons joined forces to test how elastic Dylan’s songs could be onstage.
