About this album
John Wesley Harding is Bob Dylan’s stark, understated masterpiece, and one of the key pivot points in his 1960s catalogue. Released in 1968, it followed the electric volatility of his mid-decade work with a leaner sound rooted in folk, country and biblical imagery. The album’s spare arrangements and enigmatic storytelling gave songs such as All Along the Watchtower and The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest a dry, unsettling power. Recorded in Nashville with a notably restrained approach, it helped redefine Dylan’s artistic direction and became one of his most influential late-1960s releases.
