Empire Burlesque is a sharp, contested mid-80s Bob Dylan album that pairs strong songwriting with the era’s glossy pop-rock production. Released in 1985, it was produced by Arthur Baker with Dylan, and its polished sound set it apart from the rougher work that defined much of his earlier catalogue. Songs such as Tight Connection to My Heart, Emotionally Yours and Dark Eyes showed Dylan still writing with bite and melodic confidence, even as the synthesised arrangements divided listeners.
