About this album
Black Sabbath is the album that helped define heavy metal at its source. Released in 1970, the Birmingham quartet’s debut fused blues rock with crushing riffs, occult imagery and Tony Iommi’s unmistakably heavy guitar tone, giving the genre its dark, ominous shape. Ozzy Osbourne’s eerie vocal delivery, Geezer Butler’s dense bass lines and Bill Ward’s thunderous drumming make songs like the title track and “N.I.B.” sound both primitive and revolutionary. Recorded quickly and with little polish, the album’s rawness became part of its power, and its influence on hard rock, doom and metal has been immense ever since.
