Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is a blistering debut that helped redefine British indie rock in the mid-2000s. Released in 2006, it turned sharp, deadpan observations of clubs, taxis and late-night social rituals into an urgent, guitar-driven statement of intent. Built on Alex Turner’s biting lyrics and the band’s tight, propulsive playing, the record captured the speed and wit of a group arriving fully formed. Its breakthrough success made Arctic Monkeys one of the defining British bands of their era and gave indie rock a harder, more vividly local edge.
