About this album
Phallus Dei is a landmark German psychedelic rock album and one of the defining statements of early Krautrock. Released in 1969, it shows Amon Düül II turning underground experimentalism into something heavier, stranger and more focused, with long-form improvisation, distorted riffs and surreal folk-inflected passages. The title track and sprawling opener Kanaan helped establish the group’s reputation for unstable, high-voltage intensity, while the album’s mixture of chaos and control influenced generations of progressive and psychedelic musicians. Fiercely inventive and uncompromising, it remains one of the essential documents of late-1960s European rock experimentation.
