About this album
Hearsay is Alexander O'Neal’s breakthrough album, a sharp blend of contemporary R&B, soul and Minneapolis Sound that helped define late-1980s urban pop. Released in 1987, it teamed O'Neal with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whose disciplined, glossy production matched his powerful, emotionally direct voice. The record delivered some of his best-known material, including Criticize and Fake, and established him as one of the era’s most compelling male vocalists. Its combination of slick funk, melodic hooks and tough-minded relationship songs made it a major crossover success and a cornerstone of modern soul.
