Zubin Mehta is an Indian-born conductor and musical director who has had an illustrious career over the course of nearly five decades. He is best known for his long tenure as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, from 1978 to 1991. He has also served as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, and the Munich Philharmonic, among others.
Mehta's repertoire is vast, ranging from classical to modern works, and his albums and recordings have earned him numerous awards and accolades. His albums include: Bach: The Brandenburg Concertos (1978), Brahms: Symphony No. 1 (1979), and Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 (1981). His standout songs include: Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (1977), Brahms's Symphony No. 2 (1979), and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (1981).
An interesting fact about Zubin Mehta is that he was the first conductor to conduct an orchestra in a live performance in India. In 1961, he led the Bombay Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. This was the first time a live orchestra was heard in India.
