Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. The band was formed in 1976 by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Ron Blair, Stan Lynch and Benmont Tench.

Their debut album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, was released in 1976 and featured the hit single "Breakdown". Their second album, You're Gonna Get It! (1978), was their first platinum album and featured the hit single "Listen to Her Heart". Their third album, Damn the Torpedoes (1979), was their first to hit #2 on the Billboard charts and featured the hit singles "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That".

The band went on to release a string of successful albums, including Hard Promises (1981), Long After Dark (1982), Southern Accents (1985), and Full Moon Fever (1989). Their 1993 album, Greatest Hits, was their most successful and featured the hit single "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

The Heartbreakers released their 13th and final studio album, Hypnotic Eye, in 2014, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Some of their standout albums and songs include "American Girl", "Refugee", "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "You Wreck Me", and "Don't Do Me Like That".
