Thomas Dolby is an English musician, singer-songwriter, producer, and technology entrepreneur. He first gained fame as a pioneer of the new wave synth-pop movement of the 1980s, releasing his debut album The Golden Age of Wireless in 1982. The album featured the hit singles "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Airhead". Dolby followed this up with 1983's The Flat Earth, which contained the hit "Hyperactive!", and 1984's Aliens Ate My Buick.
Dolby's most successful album was 1985's The Lost Toyshop of Heartache, which included the hit singles "I Scare Myself" and "Budapest by Blimp". The album went on to be certified gold in the US and UK. His final studio album as a solo artist was 1992's Astronauts & Heretics, which included the singles "Close But No Cigar" and "One of Our Submarines".
In addition to his solo albums, Dolby has also produced and written songs for many other artists, including Joni Mitchell, George Clinton, Tori Amos, and Prefab Sprout.
An interesting fact about Thomas Dolby is that he invented the "Beatbox" in 1984, which was the first portable electronic musical instrument. The Beatbox was a huge success and spawned a whole new genre of music, often referred to as "electro-funk".
