The Birthday Party was an Australian post-punk band formed in Melbourne in 1978. The original lineup included Nick Cave on vocals and harmonica, Mick Harvey on guitar, Tracy Pew on bass, Phill Calvert on drums, and Rowland S. Howard on guitar. They were known for their dark, brooding, and noisy sound, and their often macabre lyrics.
The Birthday Party released four studio albums during their career. The most notable of these is Junkyard (1982), which featured the songs "Release the Bats" and "Nick the Stripper". The band's second album, Prayers on Fire (1981), was also critically acclaimed and included the song "Sonny's Burning". The band's final album, Mutiny (1983), featured the songs "Swampland" and "Kiss Me Black".
An interesting fact about The Birthday Party is that their sound was heavily influenced by the American blues musician Howlin' Wolf. In fact, many of their songs were covers of his songs, including "Release the Bats" and "Nick the Stripper". The band also covered the song "Wild World" by Cat Stevens, which was later covered by the band Sonic Youth.
