Sylvester was an American disco singer-songwriter and performer, active from the late 1970s until his death in 1988. Born Sylvester James, Jr., he was often referred to simply as Sylvester. He was best known for his androgynous appearance, falsetto singing voice, and hi-NRG dance music hits.

Sylvester released several albums throughout his career, beginning with his debut album, Step II (1978). This album featured the hit single "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", which peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. His follow-up album, Stars (1979), featured the single "Dance (Disco Heat)", which also reached number one on the dance chart. Sylvester's most successful album was his fourth, Too Hot to Sleep (1982). It included the hit singles "Do Ya Wanna Funk" and "Someone Like You".

Other standout albums include Call Me (1983) and M-1015 (1985).

Sylvester is credited with writing and recording the first Hi-NRG disco track, "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)", and was an influential figure in the LGBT community. An interesting fact about Sylvester is that he was the first black artist to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
