Stone Temple Pilots (STP) is an American rock band that formed in San Diego, California in 1989. The band consists of lead vocalist Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. Stone Temple Pilots rose to fame in the early 1990s with their grunge and alternative rock sound, becoming one of the most successful bands of the decade.

The band's first two albums, Core (1992) and Purple (1994), were critically acclaimed and certified 8x Platinum and 6x Platinum respectively. Core is the band's most successful album, featuring the hit singles "Sex Type Thing", "Creep", "Plush", and "Wicked Garden". Purple also produced successful singles such as "Vasoline" and "Interstate Love Song".

The band's fourth album, No. 4 (1999), featured the hit single "Sour Girl", and is the band's third most successful album, certified 3x Platinum. STP's fifth album, Shangri-La Dee Da (2001), also featured successful singles such as "Days of the Week" and "Hollywood Bitch".

Stone Temple Pilots has also released four EPs, two live albums, and a greatest hits compilation album. Some of their most popular songs include "Big Empty", "Big Bang Baby", "Down", "Crackerman", "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart", and "Between the Lines".

An interesting fact about Stone Temple Pilots is that their original name was Mighty Joe Young, which was taken from the 1948 film of the same name. The band changed their name to Stone Temple Pilots in 1992 due to legal issues with another band who had the same name.
