Shalamar is an American R&B and soul music group, active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Founded in 1977, the group was originally composed of members Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel, and Howard Hewett. They are most noted for their classic hits such as “A Night to Remember”, “Take That to the Bank”, and “The Second Time Around”.
The group’s breakthrough album was the 1979 album “Big Fun”. The album featured the hit single “The Second Time Around”, which was a major success in the US, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also included the songs “Take That to the Bank” and “Right in the Socket”, both of which were major hits.
The group’s follow-up album, “Three for Love”, was released in 1980. The album included the hit single “Make That Move”, which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other songs on the album included “My Girl Loves Me” and “There It Is”.
Shalamar’s third album, “Friends”, was released in 1982. The album featured the hit singles “Dead Giveaway” and “Night to Remember”. The group’s fourth and final album, “Dancing in the Sheets”, was released in 1985.
An interesting fact about Shalamar is that they were the first group to have all three members nominated for Grammy Awards, with Jody Watley winning Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for the single “Looking for a New Love” in 1987.
