Roland Kirk (1935-1977) was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, best known for playing multiple instruments simultaneously. He was a powerful, pioneering and innovative musician who was respected by many. He was also an influential figure in the jazz world and an advocate for civil rights.
Kirk's most influential and popular albums include I Talk With The Spirits (1964), We Free Kings (1961), Left & Right (1968), Natural Black Inventions (1970) and Volunteered Slavery (1969). His most well-known songs include "Serenade To A Cuckoo", "Spirits Up Above", "I Talk With The Spirits" and "Mysterious Maiden".
An interesting fact about Roland Kirk is that he was a strong advocate for blind rights. He had a remarkable ability to memorize complex music and would often perform it without being able to see it. He was also a very active civil rights activist and used his music as a platform to protest racism and injustice.
