Cray's first solo album, Who's Been Talkin', was released in 1980 and was followed by several other successful albums, including Bad Influence (1983), False Accusations (1985), Strong Persuader (1986) and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1988). Cray's music is a mix of blues, soul and rock, with his distinctive guitar playing and vocal style being the defining elements.

Cray's most successful albums have been Strong Persuader (1986), which reached number 1 on the US Blues Albums chart, and Midnight Stroll (1990), which reached number 1 on the UK Albums chart.
