  • Nina Simone's story can be re-told from the late 1960s to the 1990s through her legendary performances at Montreux. From her very first appearance during the second edition of the festival on June 16, 1968, she developed a long-standing relationship with the Montreux Jazz Festival and founder / director Claude Nobs. A special relationship whose uniqueness, trust and crackling tension can be clearly heard in the recordings.

"Nina Simone: The Montreux Years" demonstrates the singer's story, which is multifaceted as it is radical. Beginning with Nina's dazzling and emotional performance in 1968 and continuing through her fiery and unpredictable concert in 1976 (one of the most extraordinary performances in the festival's history), the collection covers recordings of each of her five legendary Montreux shows from 1968, 1976, 1981 , 1987 and 1990

Also included is rare and previously unreleased material from Claude Nobs' extensive archive collection (Montreux Sounds); Nina Simone fans will be particularly thrilled by the powerful "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", the touchingly fearless "Four Women" and her hauntingly beautiful performance of "Ne Me Quitte Pas".

Alongside a haunting version of Janis Ian's powerful "Stars" (which Simone covered for the very first time during her 1976 Montreux performance) is a confident and gripping remake of Bob Marley's 1990 ballad "No Woman No Cry". The collection culminates with the encore from Nina Simone's last performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival; one of her most popular and well-known songs - the exuberant "My Baby Just Cares For Me", which reflects all facets of her life and music.
