Pavement was an American indie rock band formed in Stockton, California in 1989. It was founded by vocalist and guitarist Stephen Malkmus and drummer Gary Young, who were later joined by bassist Mark Ibold and guitarist Scott Kannberg. The band is best known for its quirky, energetic sound, incorporating elements of punk, indie rock, and noise rock.

The band's debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, released in 1992, was an underground success and is considered by many to be one of the most influential indie rock albums of the decade. It was followed by the critically acclaimed Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994) and Wowee Zowee (1995). After a brief hiatus, the band returned with their fourth album, Brighten the Corners (1997), which saw them become more mainstream and commercial.

Pavement's final album, Terror Twilight (1999), was their most polished and accessible record, but received a lukewarm reception from critics. The band disbanded in 1999, but reunited for a brief reunion tour in 2010.

Some of Pavement's standout albums and songs include Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Cut Your Hair, Range Life, and Shady Lane.

An interesting fact about Pavement is that their song "Stereo" was the first song ever played on the popular US radio station KROQ-FM.
