Paul Horn (1930-2014) was an American jazz flutist, saxophonist, and composer. He was born in New York City and was a jazz and classical music prodigy, winning a scholarship to Juilliard at the age of nine. He performed with jazz greats such as Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie.
Horn's most famous recordings were made in India and the Himalayas in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His album Inside (1968) is considered one of the pioneering albums of world music. It includes a famous version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" recorded inside the Taj Mahal. Other standout albums include Inside II (1971), Inside the Taj Mahal (1974), and Inside the Great Pyramid (1974).
One of Horn's best-known songs is "The Greatest Gift", which he co-wrote with his wife and was featured in the movie Short Circuit.
An interesting fact about Horn is that he was a student of the Indian classical music tradition and studied sitar under Ravi Shankar. He was also an advocate for peace, and in the 1970s he toured the world with a message of spiritual understanding.
