Paul Chambers was an American jazz double bassist born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1935. He is best known for his work with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk. He was one of the first bassists to play with a bow on electric bass.

Chambers began his professional career in the 1950s, playing in the bands of Kenny Burrell and Miles Davis. He joined Davis' band in 1955, performing on their seminal album, Kind of Blue, as well as several other classic albums such as Milestones and Sketches of Spain. He also performed on John Coltrane's albums, Giant Steps and My Favorite Things, and Monk's Thelonious in Action.

Chambers' most well-known song is his composition, "Whims of Chambers," which was recorded on Kind of Blue. The song features a classic bluesy bass line and has been covered by many artists, including Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.

Chambers tragically died of tuberculosis in 1969 at the age of 33. As a tribute to him, Miles Davis dedicated his 1970 album Bitches Brew to Chambers.

An interesting fact about Paul Chambers is that he was the first bassist to use a bow on electric bass. He developed this technique while playing with Miles Davis' band, and it is now widely used by bassists in jazz, fusion, and rock.
