Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French composer, organist, and teacher who is widely considered to be one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. He was a major figure in the development of both the serial and improvisatory approaches to composition. He is best known for his large-scale works for orchestra and organ, such as Turangalîla-Symphonie (1948-1949), Des canyons aux étoiles (1971-1974), and Éclairs sur l'au-delà (1989-1991). His use of bird song as a source of inspiration was also influential, and his compositions were often based on religious themes. Some of Messiaen's standout albums include Turangalîla-Symphonie, which is one of his best-known works, and Chronochromie (1960). His most popular songs include "Vocalise pour l'ange qui annonce la fin du temps" from Turangalîla-Symphonie and "L'Ascension" from the album of the same name. An interesting fact about Messiaen is that he was a noted ornithologist and was inspired by the birdsong he heard in nature. He studied and transcribed the songs of birds and incorporated them into many of his works.
