Oliver Nelson (1932-1975) was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and began his professional career in the 1950s playing in the bands of Lucky Millinder and Roy Eldridge. Nelson went on to become an acclaimed leader and arranger, releasing more than 20 albums in his career.
Nelson's standout albums include "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" (1961), "The Kennedy Dream" (1968), and "The Spirit of '67" (1967). His most popular songs include "Stolen Moments", "Butch and Butch", "Hoe-Down", "Teenie's Blues", and "St. Louis Blues".
An interesting fact about Oliver Nelson is that he was a close associate of saxophonist John Coltrane. He wrote the arrangement for Coltrane's classic recording of "My Favorite Things", and Coltrane returned the favor by performing on Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract Truth".
