Nightmares on Wax is an electronic music group from Leeds, England, founded in 1988 by George Evelyn and Kevin Harper. The group is one of the pioneering acts of the trip hop genre, but they have also explored a variety of other genres including downtempo, hip hop, acid jazz, soul, and funk.
Their debut album A Word of Science: The First and Final Chapter was released in 1991, and featured the singles "Dextrous" and "Aftermath". The album showcased the group's experimental blend of hip hop, soul, and jazz. The follow-up Smokers Delight was released in 1995 and featured the singles "Les Nuits" and "Nights Interlude".
The group's third album Carboot Soul was released in 1999 and featured the single "Soul Purpose". The album was an exploration of soul and funk, with a greater emphasis on live instrumentation than their previous work. Carboot Soul was their most successful album to date, reaching number 25 in the UK Albums Chart.
The group's fourth album Mind Elevation was released in 2003 and featured the single "Flip Ya Lid". The album was a return to their earlier, more experimental sound and featured collaborations with artists such as De La Soul and Dr. Octagon.
The group's fifth album Thought So... was released in 2006 and featured the single "You Wish". The album was a return to their earlier sound and featured collaborations with artists such as Little Dragon and Roots Manuva.
In addition to their studio albums, the group has also released a number of compilation albums and remix albums. They have also collaborated with a variety of other artists, including Coldcut, U.N.K.L.E., and DJ Shadow.
An interesting fact about Nightmares on Wax is that they were one of the first acts to sign with Warp Records, the influential independent record label.
