Overlooked jazz milestone: reissue of the album from 1958.
The recordings for the album "Jazz In Silhouette" were made on March 6, 1958 and released in May of the same year. The album is regarded as one of the best Sun Ra albums from his Chicago period, before he and his Arkestra set off from New York in the 1960s for otherworldly avant-garde excursions. "Jazz In Silhouette" was long considered an overlooked milestone that shows Sun Ra as a great creative force in the jazz universe, a center of gravity around which many developments in jazz revolved. An album that inspires, no matter what perspective you take on it. Be it in terms of rhythm, melody, mood or ensemble playing, Sun Ra succeeds in doing what few have managed to do: to be present in the past, present and future at the same time.
Reissue of the great 1959 album "Jazz In Silhouette" by Sun Ra & His Arkestra. Includes the remastered original tracks as well as additional tracks and the album "Sound Sun Pleasure". The original artwork has also been reworked. Released as a double CD and double LP on Cosmic Myth.
Cosmic Myth Records is dedicated to releasing re-bundled and fully authorized out-of-print titles from Sun Ra's Saturn Records catalog. Sun Ra's "Jazz in Silhouette" was named one of the most important jazz records of the post-war era in the Penguin Jazz Guide's "Core Collection". "Jazz in Silhouette" epitomizes Sun Ra's Chicago period of the late 1950s. Recorded and released in 1959, it broke with jazz traditions by allowing jazz standards to flourish in new compositions and arrangements.
Sun Ra as bandleader in perfect harmony with his other band members, the brilliant tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and the iconic Arkestra mainstays Marshall Allen, Pat Patrick and Ronnie Boykins. Many of the early works from these recordings remained a staple of Arkestra setlists for the rest of Sun Ra's life
