The Chicago-born trombonist Bennie Green made his Blue Note debut with his delightful 1958 album Back On The Scene featuring a stellar quintet with saxophonist Charlie Rouse, pianist Joe Knight, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Louis Hayes. From buoyant swing to Latin grooves to tender ballads the band delivers a thoroughly enjoyable program that presents standards ("I Love You" "Just Friends" "You're Mine You") as well as Green's original "Bennie Plays The Blues" and a pair of compositions by the wonderful jazz composer and fellow trombonist Melba Liston ("Melba's Mood" "Green Street").
The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was' admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the "Tone Poet," on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.
