With "Convex", Conrad Schnitzler opens a window into his experimental sound world of the 1980s - and remains mysterious in the process. The LP manages almost without information, the title dominates the cover, the music speaks for itself. Schnitzler uses a sample-and-hold generator to produce random sequences of notes - controlled chance as an artistic principle. Particularly striking is the slow tempo of the pieces, which clearly stands out from his otherwise more dynamic works.
Although Schnitzler never had ambient in mind, "Convex" is reminiscent of Satie's "musique d'ameublement" or the ambient ideas of Brian Eno in its calmness and uniformity. But Schnitzler remains independent: The music does not demand attention, but invites free interpretation. An album that poses questions without providing answers - and is fascinating for this very reason.
