Melodic Death Metal
Melodic Death Metal is a subgenre of metal music that combines the aggression and heaviness of death metal with the melodic and technical aspects of metalcore and progressive metal. It typically utilizes a traditional heavy metal instrumentation of electric guitars, bass, and drums, while adding a variety of metalcore elements such as breakdowns and screamed vocals.
The style was pioneered in the early 1990s by a group of Swedish bands, including At the Gates, In Flames, and Dark Tranquillity, who combined the melodic elements of traditional metal with the heavy aggression of death metal. The genre quickly spread across Europe, and was soon adopted by bands from the US and other parts of the world. Over the years, the style has evolved and incorporated a variety of influences from other metal subgenres, such as black metal, doom metal, and hardcore punk. Today, melodic death metal is one of the most popular subgenres of metal, and is known for its technicality, intensity, and melodic songwriting.
