Marilyn Horne (1934-2020) was an American mezzo-soprano who was celebrated for her powerful, velvety voice and her ability to perform a wide range of styles, from opera to gospel to Broadway. She had an illustrious career, performing with many of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras, including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Horne was a prolific recording artist, releasing over 60 albums, including studio recordings, live performances, and compilation albums. Her standout albums include The Great Caruso (1959), Bel Canto Spectacular (1981), and He's Got the Whole World in His Hands (1993).
Her standout songs include "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi, "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca, "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, and "Ave Maria" by Franz Schubert.
An interesting fact about Marilyn Horne is that she was the first African-American to be hired as a principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera. She was also the first female to be inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
