Luther Vandross was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He began his career as a backing vocalist for various artists such as Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Ben E. King, and Bette Midler. Vandross released his debut album, Never Too Much, in 1981. The album spawned the hit single of the same name, which topped the R&B charts for two weeks.

Vandross went on to release a string of successful albums, including Forever, for Always, for Love (1982), Busy Body (1983), Give Me the Reason (1986), Any Love (1988), Power of Love (1991), and Songs (1994). He was known for his smooth, soulful ballads, such as "Here and Now," "A House Is Not a Home," "Any Love," and "The Best Things in Life Are Free." His duet with Janet Jackson, "The Best Things in Life Are Free," topped the charts in 1992.

Vandross won eight Grammy Awards throughout his career and was nominated for four American Music Awards. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
