Larry Coryell (April 2, 1943 - February 19, 2017) was an American jazz guitarist known for pioneering the fusion of jazz and rock during the 1970s. He was dubbed the "Godfather of Fusion".
Coryell's most successful album was Spaces, released in 1971. It featured musicians including Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. He also released two other notable albums during the 1970s: The Inner Mounting Flame (1971) and Birds of Fire (1973). His standout songs include "Bolero", "Spaces", "Lady Coryell", and "High School Confidential".
An interesting fact about Coryell is that he was an early adopter of the electric guitar, buying one at the age of 15, before it was widely accepted by jazz musicians. He was also a highly respected guitar teacher, giving lessons to notable musicians such as Pat Metheny and John Scofield.
