Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was an Austrian composer who was one of the most prolific and celebrated composers of the Classical period. He was an important figure in the development of the symphony, string quartet, and other forms of chamber music. He wrote more than 100 symphonies and numerous operas, concertos, masses, and other works.
Some of his most popular works include The Creation, The Seasons, and his 104 symphonies, of which the most famous are the Surprise, the Clock, and the London symphonies. He also wrote some of the most famous piano sonatas, such as the Sonata in C major, Hob. XVI:50, the βLarkβ Sonata, and the βFarewellβ Sonata. His other popular works include the string quartets, including Op. 20, the Seven Last Words of Christ, and the Masses.
An interesting fact about Haydn is that he had a lifelong friendship with Mozart and they shared a love of music and the same sense of humor. They often played music together, and Haydn was instrumental in introducing Mozart to the music of Bach and Handel.
