Joe Pass (1929-1994) was an American jazz guitarist. He was born Joseph Anthony Passalaqua in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and was heavily influenced by the swing jazz of Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian. Pass is renowned for his impeccable technique and improvisational ability.
Joe Pass recorded more than 40 albums throughout his career, many of which are considered jazz classics. Some of his standout albums include “Virtuoso” (1973), “Virtuoso #2” (1974), “Portraits of Duke Ellington” (1974), and “Live at Donte’s” (1975). Standout songs include “Joy Spring”, “Django”, “Cherokee”, and “All The Things You Are”.
An interesting fact about Joe Pass is that he played with a number of jazz greats throughout his career, including Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and Herb Ellis. He also performed regularly with jazz trio the Great Guitars, which included Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd.
