Joan Sutherland (1926-2010) was an Australian operatic soprano who had a career spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s. She was known as ‘La Stupenda’ and was one of the most famous sopranos of the 20th century. She is perhaps best known for her coloratura soprano roles in the operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Handel.
Some of Sutherland's standout albums include her 1965 recording of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, her 1973 album of music by Handel and her 1975 album of music by Bellini. Her most famous songs include "Ah! Non credea mirarti" from La Sonnambula, "Tu che a Dio spiegasti l'ali" from Lucia di Lammermoor and "Let the Bright Seraphim" from Samson.
An interesting fact about Joan Sutherland is that she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Cambridge in 1977. She was the first Australian to receive the honor.
