Jan Hammer is a Czech-born composer, keyboardist, and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work on the synthesizer during the 1970s and 80s. He is most widely recognized for his score of the TV show Miami Vice, which earned him two Grammy Awards.

Hammer began his musical career as a jazz musician, playing with the likes of John McLaughlin and Miroslav Vitous. He also released several solo albums and a few collaborations during this period. His first solo album, The First Seven Days (1975), is considered a classic of electronic music and features the standout track "Oh, Yeah".

In 1982, Hammer released his most successful album, Melodies, which featured the single "Crockett's Theme" from Miami Vice. His other notable albums include Beyond the Mind's Eye (1992) and Adventures of the Astral Navigator (1997).

An interesting fact about Jan Hammer is that he was one of the first musicians to make extensive use of the Synclavier, a hybrid digital/analog synthesizer. He also used the synthesizer to create the iconic sound of Miami Vice.
