Jake Hanna (1931-2010) was an American jazz drummer who played with some of the top jazz musicians of the 20th century. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and started playing drums at the age of 11. He moved to New York City at the age of 21 and quickly became one of the most in-demand drummers in the city.
Hanna is best known for his work with the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. He also performed with the likes of Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, and Lee Konitz. He released several solo albums, including The Beat Goes On (1973), Hanna & Company (1977), and Hanna-Tones (1987).
Some of his standout songs include "Frim Fram Sauce," "Lullaby of Birdland," and "Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You."
An interesting fact about Jake Hanna is that he was one of the first jazz drummers to use electronic drums, which he began using in the 1970s. He was also a composer and arranger, writing several pieces for the Woody Herman Orchestra.
