Jackie Wilson (born Jack Leroy Wilson, Jr.) was an American soul and R&B singer who had a career spanning five decades. He was known as the "Mr. Excitement" of R&B music. Wilson's distinctive style of vocalizing, combined with his remarkable range, earned him the title of "The black Frank Sinatra."
Wilson's most successful album was "Lonely Teardrops" which was released in 1958 and peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200. It included his signature song "Lonely Teardrops" which became his first top-10 hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other standout albums include "Soul Galore" (1958) and "Mr. Excitement" (1959).
Wilson had several other Top 40 hits including "To Be Loved", "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet)", and "Higher and Higher". His final single to reach the Top 40 was "Night" in 1968.
An interesting fact about Jackie Wilson is that he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, only the third black artist to be inducted after James Brown and Ray Charles. He was also the first R&B artist to have a live television performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
