Howard McGhee (1918-1987) was an American jazz trumpeter, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was an important figure in the early development of bebop, and was also one of the first jazz trumpeters to work regularly with a flugelhorn.
McGhee began his career playing in swing bands in the 1930s and 1940s, including a long stint with Benny Carter's Orchestra from 1939-1941. In the 1940s, he began to explore bebop, and was an important figure in the early development of the style, particularly in Los Angeles. He was one of the first musicians to record with Charlie Parker, playing on two of Parker's earliest sessions in 1945. McGhee also made important recordings with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Dexter Gordon.
McGhee's most acclaimed albums include The Howard McGhee Sextet (1946) and Howard McGhee and His All-Stars (1947). Standout songs from these albums include "McGhee's Re-bop" and "Tippin' In", both of which were composed by McGhee.
An interesting fact about Howard McGhee is that he was the first African American to lead a jazz band in Hollywood, California. This was a significant milestone in the history of jazz, as it marked the first time that a black musician had been given such an opportunity.
