Grace Slick is a legendary rock singer-songwriter and artist, best known for her time as the lead vocalist of the rock band Jefferson Airplane. Slick was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1939 and grew up in Palo Alto, California. She became a figurehead of the 1960s counterculture and psychedelic movement.
Slick's first big break came in 1965 when she joined the San Francisco-based rock band The Great Society, which released two albums before she joined Jefferson Airplane in 1966. With Jefferson Airplane, Slick released three studio albums, including their landmark 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow, which featured the hit singles "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit". The band went on to release three more albums, After Bathing at Baxter's (1967), Crown of Creation (1968), and Volunteers (1969).
Slick released three solo albums in her career, Manhole (1974), Dreams (1980), and Software (1984). Her solo work is more experimental than her work with Jefferson Airplane and includes the hit single "Darlin'".
An interesting fact about Grace Slick is that she was originally an artist before she became a musician. Slick graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1959, and sold her artwork to support herself while she pursued a career in music.
