The Go-Go's are an American rock band that first rose to fame in the 1980s. They are considered to be the first all-female band to write their own songs and play their own instruments, and their success paved the way for other female musicians. The Go-Go's formed in Los Angeles in 1978, and their lineup included Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar, vocals), Charlotte Caffey (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Gina Schock (drums), and Kathy Valentine (bass).
The Go-Go's released their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, in 1981. It was a smash hit and spawned such classic songs as "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed." The album reached number one on the Billboard charts and went double platinum in the US. The band followed this success with their sophomore album, Vacation, in 1982. It was another hit, featuring the singles "Get Up and Go" and "Vacation," and it went gold.
The Go-Go's continued to release albums throughout the 1980s, including Talk Show (1984) and Greatest (1990). Other notable songs by the band include "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You."
An interesting fact about the Go-Go's is that they are the only all-female band to have a number one album in the US.
