Campbell's career began in 1960 when he moved to Los Angeles and became a session musician, playing guitar on recordings by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, The Monkees, and The Beach Boys. He released his debut album, Big Bluegrass Special, in 1962. He went on to release a string of successful albums including Gentle on My Mind (1967), Wichita Lineman (1968), and By the Time I Get to Phoenix (1968). He also released several duet albums with fellow country music singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, including Let It Be Me (1969).
