Elvin Jones (1927-2004) was an American jazz drummer, who is considered one of the most influential and innovative percussionists of the 20th century. He began his musical career in Detroit, Michigan, playing with jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane.
Jones is best known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet, which he joined in 1960 and performed with until 1966. During this period, he released several landmark albums, including βA Love Supremeβ (1965) and βLive at the Village Vanguardβ (1966). His style of drumming was characterized by a driving force and an inventive approach to playing. He was noted for his use of the ride cymbal and his ability to keep a steady beat while simultaneously creating complex rhythms.
In addition to his work with the John Coltrane Quartet, Jones also released several albums as a leader, including βThe Ultimateβ (1966), βElvin Jones Jazz Machineβ (1975), and βLive at the Lighthouseβ (1972). He also recorded several albums with his brothers, Thad and Hank, as the Jones Brothers.
An interesting fact about Elvin Jones is that he is the only musician to have been inducted into both the Downbeat and Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.
